Problems for Discussion and Analysis

Pages 171-2 (pages 87-88 in the first edition) of Human Resource Management in a Business Context contain two problems for discussion and analysis. They are not shown here - you need the book. This webpage is intended to provide guidance for users of the book to help in analysing the problem cases.

Rob's placement

The question about this case asks you to relate our discussion on human capital and education in Part 2 (chapter 2 in the first edition) to a real-life individul and critical career choice in today's employment market.

You could answer purely on the basis of your own opinion and judgement of career prospects with or without a higher education qualification. However, this is not a good academic approach - you should try to ground your response in the material you have read.

You might also investigate any available statistics relating success in the employment market to educational qualifications.

Finally, don't forget Rob's individual preferences (pages 152-153 - page 72 in the first edition) in the situation.

Jefford Trading

This is an organizational version of the first mini-case, again asking you to think about theoretical issues within the context of a real-life problem.

Remember to apply your reading to the issues rather than simply aswering on the basis of your own experience or opinion.

Try also to think about the problem in the context of social and individual preferences.
